Three Wishes recently brought the excitement of World Cup football to Damascus with a tournament for around 70 children and young people from disadvantaged communities.
For many of those taking part, opportunities to join organised sport are limited. The tournament gave them a chance to get on the pitch, play for a team and experience an organised competition in a safe setting.
The programme is part of our work supporting the health and rehabilitation of people affected by the war in Syria. We want sport to be accessible to young people who might otherwise have fewer opportunities to take part, and to support their physical and psychosocial wellbeing.
“Every child deserves the chance to play football, whatever their circumstances. We wanted these young people in Damascus to have that chance.”
Grassroots sport can support physical and psychosocial wellbeing, while giving young people a place to connect with others and experience being part of a team. Following the tournament, we hope to give more young people in Syria the chance to take part in organised sport in a safe and inclusive setting, particularly those who might otherwise miss out.
